OVERVIEW

What Are Zirconia Crown & Bridge Restorations?

Zirconia crowns and bridges are biocompatible dental prostheses precision-milled from high-purity zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) and yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP). Engineered for high flexural strength (up to 1200 MPa) and lifelike optical translucency, Yes Dental manufactures multiple zirconia formats tailored to clinical bite loads, aesthetic zones, and preparation depths.

A zirconia crown is a single-unit full-coverage restoration designed to reinforce structurally compromised or root-canal-treated teeth with minimal tooth reduction (0.8mm–1.0mm). A zirconia bridge is a multi-unit rigid prosthesis connecting one or more pontics to supporting abutment teeth or dental implants to restore chewing function across edentulous spaces without the risk of metal-frame fatigue.

Our production workflow integrates open digital intraoral scans (STL, PLY, OBJ) or physical elastomer impressions with 5-axis CAD/CAM CNC milling, high-temperature vacuum sintering, and microscopic margin audits before clinical delivery.

Why Zirconia?

Choose the Zirconia Format Around the Case

Different zirconia structures offer different combinations of strength, appearance and finishing requirements. The right choice should follow the clinical prescription and case design.

01

Strength

Zirconia is valued for its mechanical performance and is available in formats suited to strength-focused restorative cases.

02

Aesthetics

Multilayer and layered options can provide different shade, translucency and surface-finishing characteristics.

03

Digital Precision

Digital design and CAD/CAM manufacturing support a controlled workflow from case information to finished restoration.

04

Case Flexibility

Five zirconia formats give dentists options for monolithic, substructure, multilayer and layered restorations.

Zirconia Formats

Five Zirconia Crown & Bridge Options

Choose the structure that matches the prescription, desired appearance and finishing approach for the case.

Monolithic zirconia crowns and bridges
Format 1 of 5

Monolithic Zirconia Crowns & Bridges

Monolithic zirconia is milled as a single restoration without a separate veneering layer. It is a practical option when a strength-focused, streamlined restoration is required.

Zirconia copings for layered restorations
Format 2 of 5

Zirconia Copings for Layered Restorations

A zirconia coping is a milled substructure designed to receive a separate veneering or finishing process. This option is suitable when the final restoration will be completed through a layered workflow.

Multilayer zirconia crowns and bridges
Format 3 of 5

Multilayer Zirconia Crowns & Bridges

Multilayer zirconia is produced from a pre-shaded block with a built-in shade or translucency gradient. This can create a more natural transition across the restoration without a separate hand-layering stage.

Porcelain-fused-to-zirconia crowns and bridges
Format 4 of 5

PFZ Zirconia Crowns & Bridges

Porcelain-fused-to-zirconia (PFZ) combines a zirconia coping with hand-layered porcelain on the visible surface. This approach allows the ceramist to build shade, contour and surface characteristics through a layered finishing process.

Lingual collar zirconia crowns and bridges
Format 5 of 5

Lingual Collar Zirconia Crowns & Bridges

This cutback approach retains a zirconia collar on the lingual or palatal aspect while porcelain is layered on the facial surface. The design combines a visible layered surface with additional zirconia support in the retained area.

Use this table as a quick guide; final selection should follow the clinical prescription and case design.

Format Structure Best suited to Finishing Appearance
Monolithic Single solid zirconia restoration Strength-focused cases Full contour Good
Coping Zirconia substructure Custom layered work Separate layering Depends on ceramist
Multilayer Pre-shaded gradient zirconia Balanced appearance and workflow Minimal additional layering Very good
PFZ Zirconia core + porcelain Visible layered restorations Hand-layered porcelain Excellent
Lingual Collar Zirconia collar + facial porcelain Selected bridge designs Facial layering Very good

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Zirconia Crowns & Bridges

Zirconia crowns and bridges are dental restorations fabricated from zirconium dioxide and designed according to the dentist's prescription and case requirements. A crown restores an individual prepared tooth, while a bridge replaces missing teeth using a multi-unit restoration.

Monolithic zirconia is milled as a single restoration without a separate veneering layer. Multilayer zirconia uses a pre-shaded block with a built-in shade or translucency gradient. The suitable format depends on the clinical prescription and case design.

A zirconia coping is a milled substructure designed to receive a separate veneering or finishing process. It is used when the final restoration will be completed through a layered workflow.

Porcelain-fused-to-zirconia (PFZ) combines a zirconia coping with hand-layered porcelain on the visible surface. It follows a layered finishing process.

Provide the available digital scan or approved case files, prescription, restoration type, shade selection and any useful photographs or additional case instructions.

Submit your case information and prescription through the case-submission process. The workflow then covers digital design, manufacturing, finishing, quality control and delivery.
